Once a cottage industry of four or five partners operating out of single practices, GP services are becoming increasingly attractive to larger healthcare providers who are buying them up, employing doctors, nurses and admin staff, and selling clinical services to the NHS. Although this is effectively what individual doctors have always done, the emergence of these conglomerate service providers represents a far larger level of financial activity. The Practice pic manages 50 primary care practices and provides care for around 150,000 NHS patients. In acquisitive mood, in April the company bought six practices previously run by UnitedHealth Primary Care. Another private sector primary care provider is Care UK which currently operates 13 GP practices across England, 12 of which offer a walk-in service.
