A GOLDEN AGE?

The official retirement age is drifting into the future. While several friends have picked up their 'Freedom Pass' on turning a youthful 60,l won't get mine until 65 - and my son, recently graduated, will not be able to put his feet up until he turns 68. The pension age is rising for three reasons. First, we are living longer because of better nutrition, medical care and public health. Second, we are having fewer children (indeed, in some affluent countries such as Japan and Italy, the norm is to concentrate resources on a single child). Third, the UK's demographic bulge is reflecting the ageing, post-war baby boomers.
