Choosing a man who went from riches-to-rags after calling his own products 'crap', to launch an event aimed at encouraging local business networking and growth does not come across as the most informed of decisions. But that's exactly what Essex-based firm Haslers has done, signing up none other than Gerald Ratner as special guest speaker at its Go4Growth initiative. Fortunately for all concerned, Ratner's dramatic fall from grace happened 22 years ago when his inappropriate comments wiped ￡500m from the value of his stores. He has returned once more to winning ways; one can only hope there aren't any more ill-conceived jokes at the event.
