An Essex accountant who claimed £340,000 in fraudulent VAT repayments has been jailed for four years and three months following an HMRC investigation. The sentencing at the Old Bailey followed an HMRC investigation which began in 2012 and discovered VAT fraud in which Shahzad Rubani had recruited friends and associates to help set up a chain of VAT-registered companies purely to commit fraud. He amended company accounts and submitted false VAT returns for his 'clients', claiming phantom repayments that were not due and even claiming Jobseekers Allowance which he was not entitled to.
