Have you ever heard the expression "Can't see the forest for the trees?" It's more relevant today than ever before, and this became painfully clear as we compiled this year's Annual Accessories Census Report. As we pored over 2016 sales statistics and interview notes with retailers, manufacturers and NPD Group analysts, one theme kept recurring: Those with a myopic view on the fashion industry are going to lose. Why? Because what is happening OUTSIDE the industry can be as important, if not more important, than what's happening within. In other words, don't let the parameters of the industry prevent you from seeing the big picture, and figuring out the opportunities right in front of you.
