摘要

This study presents a new model developed for designing low carbon energy systems in local areas using renewable energy. A GIS data approach based on spatial distribution of resources is combined with an optimization formulation to design the renewable energy system. Proximity to urban areas is introduced in the model as key factor determining need for and cost of electricity transmission lines. Power supply options covered by the model are solar photovoltaics (PV) and onshore wind power systems. Model development towards inclusion of forest biomass as an additional alternative is ongoing. The model is applied to evaluate renewable energy targets in Iskandar region, Malaysia. For instance, model outcomes show that up to 6% of current electricity demand in the region may be suppl ied by solar PV and wind power.
