John Frazer in conversation with Samantha Hardingham

Twenty-one years ago, in the autumn of 1991, the new cohort for the aa's Diploma Unit 11 met on a moored racingyacht in St Katharine's Dock. The boat belonged to tutors John and Julia Frazer. It was their home, office, unit space and means of escape (from their other home, which was at that time on the shores of Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland). The students were the usual odd assortment of potential talent for a unit that on the face of it appeared to be rooted in computer science. I was one of them and for my part loved draw-ing, had a complete aversion to sciences of a disciplined kind, found mathematics difficult and didn't play chess. I explained this to John at our unit interview. He said, 'Good. Anyway, you should be inter-viewing me.'
