So, there are countries without place and histories without chronology. Whole cities, planets, conti-nents, universes that are impossible to trace on any map or in any sky, quite simply because they do not belong to any space. Without doubt these cit-ies, continents, planets are born, so to speak, in the heads of men or, more precisely, in the interstices of their words, in the weft of the tales they tell or, if not there, in the placeless place of their dreams, in the empty well of their hearts; in short, wherever the salve of Utopia is sought. Yet I believe there are also - in every society - Utopias that occupy a precise and real place, a place that can be located on a map; Utopias that have a determinate time, a time that can be fixed and measured according to a regular calendar. It is highly probable that every human group, every culture, carves out places that are Utopian in the space that it occupies, where it really lives, where it works, and moments that are uchronic in the time it goes about its business.
