Kenzo Tange on Residential Design

An opening interview published in an issue entitled, "For a New Home 一 Methods of Residential Design." Kazuo Shinohara (then 41years old) interviews Kenzo Tange (53 years old) . The opening question of the interview, "I should very much like to ask you why you do not design houses" is indeed a startling remark when considering the theme of the issue. The January 1966 issue of "Shinkenchiku" in which this interview was published, featured texts such as "The Making of Houses" (Kiyoshi Seike), "Building Residences, Using Residences, and Residences Support and Change People" (Kiyoshi Ikebe), "The Drama of Design - its Cast and Production, "(Takamasa Yoshizaka), "Study from the Interior" (Junzo Yoshimura), and presented respective ideas concerning the means for cmsting new residences towards the approaching era. The interview develops through discussions from multiple perspectives including both architect's stances for residential design, as well as measures for thinking about residences and the city.
