A large space is that which can appear intimidating. My intention was to create a space that was contrary. In other words, I wanted to create a spacious place. I considered creating a space that gently encompasses people both at times when it is used in small numbers and when it is packed and crowded. In order to do so it was necessary to devise a new kind of large space. The local authorities had requested a wooden structure built with cedar, yet I wanted to avoid putting too much strain on cedar wood that is a naturally soft material.
