There is a debate in modern Evolutionary Biology. Some authors feel that, in light of all the new insights into evolutionary biology in recent decades, we need a fundamental rethink of Evolutionary Theory (Müller, ). Others feel that the fundamental essence of Evolutionary Theory has not changed, and that all the novel insights just fill in details of how the Theory is implemented in specific cases (Futuyma, ). Rui Diogo is clearly in the first camp. In fact, he feels that most authors in this camp (often referred to as the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis) do not go far enough, and have still left out important features/mechanisms that are crucial for understanding how evolution works. He therefore proposes his own revision of Evolutionary Theory, which he calls ONCE: Organic Nonoptimal Constrained Evolution.
