Histone post-translational modifications. The four core histones are modified by acetylation (Ac), phosphorylation (P), lysine trimethylation (Me3), arginine symmetric and asymmetric dimethylation (Me2s, Me2a, respectively), ubiquitination (Ub), and poly ADP ribosylation. The chromatin modifying enzymes shown are lysine acetyltransferases (KAT), histone deacetylases (HDAC), protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMT), lysine methyltransferases (KMT), mitogen- and stress-activated protein kinases (MSK), and protein phosphatase (PP). The metabolites (α-ketoglutarate, α-KG; S-adenosylmethionine, SAM) required for enzyme activity are indicated with an asterisk.
