With more than 100,000 patients diagnosed per year [2], at a burden that exceeds USD 3 billion [4, 7], tibiotalar osteoarthritis (OA) is hard both on patients and healthcare systems. Unlike hip and knee OA, in which arthroplasty is considered uncontroversial, both tibiotalar arthrodesis and total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) are used to treat tibiotalar OA. Both procedures improve pain, but each of those interventions has real—and unique—shortcomings.
