The Catholic Church AIDS and Sexuality in Ireland: Uncovering Part of the Story

In this issue of AJPH, Nolan and Butler (p. 908) describe a critical moment early in the AIDS epidemic when the Catholic Church voluntarily became an agent of positive social change. Responding to state inaction that stemmed in part from Catholicism’s deep hold on Irish mores and politics, the Church created an initiative that paradoxically drew on liberal World Health Organization principles that were strongly at odds with its own moral teaching.
