The development and proliferation of high-throughput genomic technologies has resulted in the fantastic exponential growth of sequenced human genomes. This growth has resulted in a doubling of the amount of genomic data every seven months [ ]. It is likely that future growth in this area will primarily result from the increased amount of genomics data coming from healthcare. The Global Alliance for Genomics and Health, a standards setting body for genomics in healthcare, has estimated that as many as 60 million patients may have their genomes sequenced by 2025 [ ]. Providing privacy assurances that are appropriate for protecting human health and identity information requires trade-offs between duties to share potentially lifesaving data, duties to protect privacy, and compliance with national and international electronic health information laws [ ].
