Expansion of corn based ethanol production in Brazil has resulted in increased availability of dried distiller’s grains (DDG), but there is relatively little information available concerning its use optimal in tropical conditions with cattle. This study was conducted at Centro de Pesquisa Nutripura, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, between October and December of 2017 (wet season) to evaluate use of DDG in finishing cattle diets. Three hundred and ninety eight bulls with initial body weight of 477 ± 53 kg, were blocked by breed (Nellore and Nellore x Angus) and randomly distributed among 16 pens. Cattle were fed one of four diets for 42 d: Control (diet without DDG), or diets with 13, 26 or 39% of diet DM as DDG (DDG13, DDG26, and DDG39, respectively). Data were analyzed using SAS statistical software. No differences in final body weight, carcass weight, or carcass yield were observed among treatments, but there were tendencies ( < 0.10) for quadratic effects of DDG on ADG (1.28, 1.20, 1.28, and 1.39 kg/d) and gain:feed (0.130, 0.120, 0.124, and 0.132 for Control, 13, 26, and 39% DDG, respectively). Cattle fed the Control diet consumed less feed than their counterparts fed DDG ( < 0.02), and DMI as a percent of BW was greater for cattle fed DDG (1.98, 2.00, 2.14, and 2.06 for Control, 13, 26, and 39% DDG, respectively; quadratic effect, < 0.05). Carcass weights were not different among treatments (303.1, 297.3, 302.3, and 302.6 for Control, 13, 26, and 39% DDG, respectively; > 0.10). We concluded that addition of DDG to finishing diets increases DMI, but does not improve feed efficiency.
