Blood glucose control in hospitalized patients is essential because both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia are associated with adverse outcomes, such as increased risk of infection, delays in surgical procedures or discharge from the hospital, and increased mortality [ , , , , ]. Therefore, consensus statements about glycemic control in inpatients from several medical organizations, such as the American Diabetes Association, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, American College of Physicians, and Society of Critical Care Medicine, generally target glucose levels between 140 and 180 mg/dL [ , , ].
