As the increase of the oldest old population in the U.S. and China, both countries face the challenge of meeting the needs of long-term care (LTC) for older adults. This forum invites scholars and researchers from these two countries to share their knowledge and insights on the development of LTC policy and practices. Using a 6-wave longitudinal survey, the first presentation examined disability trajectory and the duration of different levels of disability status for rural elders in China. This presentation also provided policy recommendations based on the findings. The second presentation provided background on the growing need for LTC services in the U.S. and why insurance is the most appropriate way to address this need. For the past several years, China has pilot tested government-sponsored LTC insurance in a dozen cities. The third presentation examined economic and social impact on the wellbeing of older adults and development of social service industry as the result of implementation of this pilot LTC insurance. The fourth presentation introduced the Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) LTC program, an innovative and person-centered practice model in the U.S. This presentation shed lights for improving quality of LTC care in other countries.
