THE MODERATING EFFECTS OF LIVING ARRANGEMENT ON LIFE SATISFACTION AMONG OLDER ADULTS IN RURAL CHINA

This study aims to explore how living arrangement (LA) could moderate the effects of intergenerational relationships (IR) on life satisfaction (LS). Multivariate regression with moderation effect was used to identify the effects of IR on LS, and how LA of older adults, could moderate the effects. A total of 1,196 respondents from wave six were included in the final analysis. Results indicate that LS among older adults in rural China is medium-high. LA moderates the effect of emotional support on LS for those living with spouse only and grandchildren only, it also moderates the effect of conflict on LS for those living with spouse only. The effects of total monetary and instrumental support received on LS are moderated for those who live with spouse and adult children only. It is recommended that programs addressing IR should identify specific needs for different LA group.
