IntroductionHepatic encephalopathy is an important underlying cause of consciousness disorders. Possible causes of hepatic encephalopathy include hepatic failure and shunt encephalopathy resulting from a portosystemic venous shunt. Balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration is generally an effective treatment for hepatic encephalopathy.
