Users of the IAIMS Knowledge Network at the Georgetown University Medical Center have access to multiple in-house and external databases from a single point of entry through BioSYNTHESIS. This retrieval system, which provides an easy-to-use single menu access point to over 10 databases that reside on disparate computers, will be demonstrated through direct dial-up to the Georgetown campus. The databases include bibliographic, full-text, informational and diagnostic systems. In addition to providing an access bridge to in-house databases of the medical center, BioSYNTHESIS includes communication scripts utilized in the LAN connections to the University's three major libraries (main campus, law center and medical center). BioSYNTHESIS also includes a gateway to computer systems at other institutions and corporations.BioSYNTHESIS interfaces multiple hardware including diverse computers and network systems such as DEC VAXs, AT&T 3B2s, Macintosh, IBM PC/PS2s and the AT&T ISN and SYTEK networks. Ethernet and TCP/IP protocols play an integral role in the network architecture. The BioSYNTHESIS software, written in C, is UNIX based.
