Future microcomputerized biomedical instruments will provide a level of performance far beyond that available in existing systems. They will incorporate high-resolution multicolor graphical displays, sophisticated interactive user interfaces, and provide true real-time performance. This paper reports on the hardware-software realization of a prototype multiprocessor system with capability for extensive processing of multichannel biomedical data in real-time. This system serves as a “model” for future systems. Capabilities implemented include low overhead data acquisition, high-speed spectral processing, and multicolor graphical displays. Major applications could include medical research, clinical diagnosis, and surgical monitoring.
