Computer generated medical data will become a more frequent part of civil and criminal litigation concerning the delivery of and billing for medical services. It is clear that medical and computing professionals have a duty to cooperate with lawfully-made discovery requests and subpoenas except where some privilege may prevent release. The printouts which display such records in court may be introduced where those records represent data regularly entered in the course of business and where a proper foundation has been laid and has survived the provider's challenges. Finally, sufficient judicial support exists to permit the use of a random sample of records as proof of the characteristics of the total universe of records in question.
