Development of a Residency Applicant Selection System Using Microcomputer Database Management Software

This paper describes the design, development, use and evaluation of a data system for ranking applicants to a family medicine residency. Design requirements included implementation on a microcomputer, simplicity of use by clerical personnel, rapidity of data entry and report generation, and comprehensiveness of reports. A complete, menudriven set of application programs was written in the dBASE II command language. Time required to develop the system and to complete each data management task for the 1983 group of applicants was documented, and the utility of individual reports was assessed by members of the residency's selection committee.
