A Reflection of Joan

A case history is reported to demonstrate a simple psychotherapeutic approach in family practice to patients with psychoneurotic illness with somatic complaints. The patient had a two-year history of multiple aches and pains, particularly centred on her abdomen. In two interviews, a total of one and a half hours, her problem was isolated more definitely and relief was provided for her symptoms. It is suggested that this is a practical approach to such patients, who are probably a large factor in any “overutilization” of physician's services.
