This paper argues that the only criterion for the evaluation of the Soviet system is practice:whether the system resolved major obstacles to social development and promoted it.Specifically, major issues concerned the Soviet Union were industrialization, defense against German invasion, and the maintenance of sovereignty. There were certain periods in the development of the Soviet system:in the 1920s-30s,the October Revolution eliminated vestigial feudalism and laid the foundation of modernization;the period of the 1930s-50s witnessed the promotion of industrialization and the victory of the Great Patriotic War;the social transition of the 1960s-90s gained valuable experiences and lessons from the experimentation of marketization. However, reforms of Gorbachev era completely denied the virtue of the Soviet system, resulting in the final dissolution of the Soviet Union.
