The opening of the twentieth-first century offers both opportunities and challenges for the development of historiography.Of many concerned issues,historians across the world have been debating on how to balance case studies and macroscopic views in historical research.1 In China,text criticism as a meticulous approach of case studies has dominated the field since the High Qing period.2 Some criticize this scholarly tradition,believing that Chinese scholars have been too narrowly focused on the text and shunning away from some more significant issues in authentic historical experiences.
