The seven development stages of electric power industry and its characteristics in Taiwan are reviewed and the development prospects in next 10 years are analyzed. The status, characteristics and prospects of hydropower development in Taiwan are also introduced herein. The difficulties in developing hydropower and corresponding countermeasures are analyzed, including needing to counter the climate change and frequent earthquakes, the rising awareness of environmental protection, the protection and preservation of cultural heritage and the assent of local residents on the development of hydropower project. The inspirations of electric power industry development of Taiwan on the development of electric power in Chinese Mainland are also proposed.
