The microstructures of nanosized alumina powders prepared by sol gel routine were systematically studied with transmission electron microscopy and X ray diffractometer. It was found that the morphologies of alumina gel powders change in the orders of caterpillar thorn granular dumbbell shaped structures during calcining at temperatures from 20?℃ to 800?℃, 1?200?℃ and 1?300?℃. The caterpillar shaped structure composed of strings with a diameter of 5?nm.
