Climate prediction is the ultimate of the World Climate Research Program and one major task challenging the disaster reduction and social-economic development.China is one of the countries in the world who first started to perform seasonal climate prediction via dynamical climate models,and has achieved considerable encouraging results in the past 20 years.However,due to the inherent uncertainty of the climate prediction and imperfectness of the climate models,and due to the inadequate understanding on the climate variability,current climate prediction skill remains at a limited level and cannot well satisfy the public demands.Therefore,climate prediction has been a very important focus for the atmospheric research.Major themes include understanding the laws govcrning the climate variability and detecting new theory and methodology for seasonal climate prediction.In this field,approaches that are based either on empirical-statistical means or dynamical ways or their combination are equally important.
