Believe it or not, the township used to be notoriously poor though it is just 6.5 kilometers away from the heart of the Chengdu Plain known since ancient times as "the Land of Plenty" for its abundant natural resources. According to Bai Gang, currently Chengdu's vice-mayor who was the Party secretary of Jinjiang District a few years ago, in the past officials who had erred in work were often sent there as a way of punishment. "The township was also where young promising officials were sent to work to have their willpower and abilities tested," he says,half jokingly.
