Concentrations of dissolved humic substances in the rivers of eastern China were found to be 0.9- 14.4 mg/L with a median value of 4.6.The contents of dissolved humic substances in river water generally decrease from north to south,a trend similar to that of aquatic sediments and soils.Results of multiple regression analysis and path analysis showed that the dissolved stream humic substances are of a combined autochthonous and allochthonous origin.
