Why is a Professor in the Department of Crop Sciences such a dominant presence in the field of disinfection byproducts(DBPs)? I believe the answer to this question exemplifies the characteristics of impactful researchers. Most research fields rely on a set of core skills and tend to develop tunnel-vision with respect to research topics. These factors can be stultifying for the field, but present opportunities to those in other fields with the vision and fortitude to span research fields and fill unoccupied niches where their approach and skillset is needed and lacking.
