The afferent connections and its immunohistochemical characteristics of the marginal division of the rat corpus striatum were studied with tract tracing and immunohistochemical methods. The afferent projection neurons of the marginal division were in the lateral part of the substantia nigra and its dorsolateral area, including the peripeduncular nucleus and posterior intralaminar nucleus. Using double labeling technique, we observed that some HRP and substance P(SP), cholecystokinin (CCk), neurotensin (NT),leucine-enkephalin (L-Enk),or tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) double labeled neurons were observed in the above regions.It is suggested that these affterent projection neurons of the marginal division may be associated with the function of sensation,memory and movement.
