Due to the existing deficit in sediment supply, the Rhine is subjected to large scale and longterm river bed erosion, similar to many big rivers in Central Europe. Since a well balanced regime is of utmost importance for ship traffic as well as water management and nature, many partial measures were applied over the last 20 years to achieve a sediment balance in the Rhine. To be able to process all interventions numerically, the statistical empirical model (HFBM) was developed. River geometry as well as large number of measurements of bed load and suspended particles are the basis for this model. The model helps to optimize the individual calculation operations, to allow ad hoe controlling interventions in the sediment management. The first selection is dedicated to the data bases and management. Model description and structural design as well as the configuration with the hardware and software required for the creation of the model are described in detail. The discussion of the evaluation and results and an outlook on the future development of the model rund off this article. At the end you find a presentation of possibilities for operative use.
