1 Definition of Pain The International Association for the Study of Pain(IASP)defines pain as‘unpleasant sensory and emotional experience,associated with actual or potential tissue damage,or described in terms of such damage’.However,in animals,pain is defined as‘an aversive sensation and feeling associated with actual or potential tissue damage’.Pain can be initiated by transduction of nociceptor at peripheral site,then transmitted to the spinal cord for modulation and projected to the brain from the spinal cord for perception of pain.
