The reaction between yttrium chloride and ammonium bicarbonate happens during the preparation of nano-yttrium oxide with the formula of Y(OH)0.1 C10.1(CO3)1.4·2H2O. The existing forms of chlorion in yttrium oxide were discussed. It is shown that the chloride ion in nano-yttrium oxide is mainly existing as: absorbate or inclusion in NH4Cl, or complex compound of yttrium bicarbonate. It also indicate that the content of chloride in nano-yttrium oxide is mainly affected by the chloride ion in the compound of yttrium bicarbonate and inclusion in as NH4C1. At the same time the content of chloride in nanometer yttrium oxide can be deduced by washing, raising the temperature ofcal cination and prolonging the time of heat retaining. In this way the nanometer yttrium oxide containing 0.054% of chloride was gained.
