Today in Lhasa, there are new buildings of different shapes and colors all around. Some of them are tall and imposing, while others are small and dainty.Their architectural styles reflect the clever combination of tradition and modernity, the artistic conversation between Han and Tibetan aesthetics, and the relationship between the part and the whole, leaving a deep impression on those who see them. Many new structures in Lhasa were built via modern architectural concepts and advanced construction machinery thanks to materials such as steel, industrial glass, and aluminum-magnesium alloys. This was a far cry from the old methods of construction such as pounded agar(a special soil),wooden pillar nets, pema(a kind of grass only found in Tibet)walls, and techniques involving elaborate ornamentation.
