The predecessor of the Zibo New High-tech Industrial Development Zone was the Zibo Industrial Processing Zone. In November 1992, it was listed as a national new high-tech industrial development zone approved by the State Council. In December the same year the Shandong Provincial Government approved the establishment of a foreign-oriented industrial processing zone in Zibo. The total area of the Zibo New High-tech Industrial Development Zone and the Foreign-oriented Industrial Processing Zone is 77.2 sq km, the joint name being the Zibo New High-tech Industrial Development Zone.
