Since the implementation of the Seventh Five-Year Plan (1985-1990), the comprehen-sive control of the Loess Plateau has been listed as one of state key S&T projects in China’s capital construction. Jointly sponsored by the CAS and other related departments, a total of ll experimental & demonstrative areas (EDA) have been set up to conduct located field research in different physical and social conditions. The experiences of the past 13 years prove that this is a huge engineering system and a feasible strategic masterwork of great significance leading to the achievement of remarkable R&D results both in theory and practice. Our success in taming the Loess Plateau through the 11 EDAs provides convincing proof of the affluent potential housed in the Plateau and lays a solid and systematic foundation for improving local ecosystems, control of soil-and-water losses and the nurture of an environment-friendly farming practice on the Plateau.
