Jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus (Temminck et Schlegel) is an important fishery resource in the coastal waters around southern Japan. They spawn primarily in the shelf-break of the East China Sea (ECS), south of 28 N. latitude. Riding on the south-to-north movement of the kuroshio and its branch currents, its fertilized eggs and fries are then transferred to off-shore waters along the Pacific coastlines of Japan, the ROK and east China. The fish is a typical and ideal target for research into the influence of the current transport on the early growth of a migrating fish and on the process to refurnish the resources.
