Heavy-ion beams irradiation is one of the principal methods used to create various plant mutants, which are important in plant genetics and gene function research. In present study, dry seeds of Taraxacum kok-saghyz(TKS)were exposed to high-energy carbon-ion beams(Energy:80.55 MeV/u;Dose:0,100,200,300,400,500,600 and 700 Gy)provided by the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou(HIRFL).Survival rate and the growth of primary root were studied in this research. Results indicated that the carbon-ion beams had inhibition effects on the survival rate and growth of primary root. Both the survival rate and root length of TKS decreased after exposure by carbon-ion beams, and the degree of this inhibition effects enhanced by the increasing dose.More specifically, the growth of seedlings was inhibited seriously when the dose was above 400 Gy,there was nearly no root growth could be observed in 600 and 700 Gy groups(Fig.1).In summary, for high-energy carbon-ion beams,0200 Gy are suitable dosage range for mutation breeding of TKS.
