In a dipole-containing polymer, the orientation of the dipoles with an alternating electric field is limited by the friction of the polymer segments. The ability to align the dipoles with the electric field varies with polymer molecular weight. Use of in-situ dielectric measurement techniques to monitor the conversion of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate to polymer is examined. In addition, the dielectric properties of poly(2-ethylhexyl acrylate) are studied over a wide range of frequencies using an interdigitated sensor that is connected to an impedance analyzer. Dielectric measurements on the polymer are fitted to the Cole-Cole model to obtain the static and infinite frequency permittivity. A comparison is made between the dielectric properties and the molecular weight determined via intrinsic viscosity and gel permeation chromatograph. Experimental results from dielectric monitoring of the polymerization are compared to those obtained via FTIR spectroscopy.
