Wind energy is an abundantly available renewable energy source but its intermittent nature, to some degree is still a problem. However, with modern day power electronics and control technology, wind power penetration into the grid is ever increasing. Storage systems in conjunction with wind power systems would not only allow harnessing the wind power more efficiently but could be developed to level peak demands at lower wind periods.;This thesis is an analysis of permanent magnet coupled wind turbine and battery bank storage system interconnecting to variable loads. Gearless, direct drive wind generator running at low variable speed is connected to variable loads at constant voltage via pulse width modulated back to back converters. Isolation of the load and wind generator is obtained through the frequency converters connected via a dc link. The dc link voltage is maintained constant by the generator side converter while the load voltage is maintained constant by the load side converter thus ensuring the power transfer from the source to load. Battery bank connected to the dc bus store extra energy at high wind speeds or low demand and supply the deficit at low wind speeds or peak demands.;MATLAB simulation of the test system with step by step validation of the individual control models has, with some limitations, suggested acceptable performance. Power transfer from wind to the loads and/or battery bank based on constant dc bus voltage irrespective of changes in wind within variable power operating limits of the wind turbine, is validated by simulation results.
