摘要

This study is a report of the origin and development of The Rene Dubos Center for Human Environments.;The Center is a result of the collaboration of an interdisciplinary (scientific/humanistic) approach to environmental problems, developed by the Total Education in the Total Environment (T.E.T.E.) organization, and the socio-environmental philosophy of the eminent scientist/humanist, Rene Dubos. The program of The Center evolved out of an interdisciplinary environmental education program in a school system, the application of environmental education models in four states, regional workshops involving participants from fifty states, an international conference at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a workshop for teacher trainers from eight African nations, annual forums on environmental issues, and a case history of an environmental success story--the restoration of the Willamette River in Oregon.;The objectives of The Center are to develop creative policies for the resolution of environmental problems and to help the public and decision-makers formulate new environmental values. The Center is based on the fundamental premise that technological solutions to society's problems cannot be developed successfully without a humanistic approach.;The Center has established four types of programs: (1) Forums: Meetings for the public and decision-makers that deal with key environmental issues; (2) Media: Books, television programs, and exhibits that communicate with the broader public; (3) Land Management Demonstrations: Practical demonstrations of the philosophy of The Center--"Think Globally, Act Locally"; and (4) Fellowships: Young scholars research case histories of environmental success stories.
