摘要

Essentially the study considers the nature of work and technology in the thought of Gabriel Marcel. Marcel's contention is that the pervasive influence of technique has transcended its boundaries and has eclipsed the interior aspects of the human personality, the core of which is expressed in the metaphor, 'ontological sense.' A response to this dehumanizing dilemma, which stresses the functional aspects of the person in light of his productivity, is a workers' education program designed by the United Steelworkers of America that focuses on the humanities and social sciences. The study is an attempt to affirm the validity of the relationship that exists in the provinces of work, technology and labor education utilizing the social philosophy of Gabriel Marcel.; Chapter I fleshes out the skeletal structure of the dissertation with particular emphasis on the review of the literature, statement of the problem, and methodology. Chapter II is concerned with an explanation and description of Marcel's ideology and world view. Chapter III examines the nature of work and attendant attitudes that have evolved in western civilization. It demonstrates the limitations and boundaries of work examined through a Marcelian prism.; It underscores the changing attitude toward work particularly in our modern culture where the worker yearns for job satisfaction more than just high wages and fringe benefits. Chapter IV is devoted to an investigation of the role of technology and how it has been transformed into a cult. Chapter V is a Marcelian response to this ossifying dilemma which examines the constructive and humanizing influences of a humanities-based labor education program sponsored by the United Steelworkers.
