The focus of this study is the transformation of an Eastern aesthetic into Western terms. The work of Lady Murasaki Shikibu, the tenth-century Japanese writer, was the major means by which the Eastern aesthetic was apprehended, and the basis for the creation of a poetical dramatic monologue presenting Lady Murasaki herself.;Lady Murasaki's masterpiece The Tale of Genji and her diary were the primary sources from which the events, themes, and specific lines of development were drawn. In addition to these primary sources, other critical works contributed to the establishment of a context wherein the Eastern aesthetic could be expressed.;The play is called Dwellers Above the Clouds and is designed to embody an Eastern aesthetic reflecting the literary qualities of classical Japan: the literary aesthetic effect known as mono no aware; the major themes of nature, human affairs and time; and the delicate graduations of tone appropriate to such content.;The creative process of this transformation is presented as well, and the development of the dramatic monologue is described as the choices made from the first to the sixth and final draft are considered. Particular emphasis on theme, tone, imagery, diction and tension is provided. The problems and challenges of transformation are discussed and the differences between Eastern and Western literature are presented.;This study is another in the international tradition and takes its place in the long line of works affected by an Eastern tradition.
