This dissertation describes the tests on selected residential, commercial, and small industrial areas of the Texas Electric Service Company system and the statistical analysis performed on the test data gathered. The purpose of field testing was to provide data in order to analyze changes in energy consumption due to changes in feeder voltage levels. These results were also used for the purpose of validating the simulation capability of the Distribution System Analysis and Simulation (DSAS) program, developed in conjunction with the field test activity. The primary function of the DSAS program is to provide detailed simulation of the distribution feeder utilizing load energy models and three-phase circuit modeling. The DSAS program is capable of predicting energy changes as a function of voltage at the circuit level. The data preparation and input requirements are very detailed and somewhat tedious but computer simulation is considerably less involved than planning and conducting field tests over some extended period of time.;The results of component testing (reference 1) and field testing indicated a general trend in energy reduction with a corresponding reduction in operating voltage. Computer simulation of the test areas using the DSAS program compared satisfactorily with the statistical analysis of field tests.;The DSAS program provides a utility engineer with a tool in which the effect on energy consumption due to reduced voltage operation can be predicted. The field test procedures and specifications also provide excellent guidelines in the event a utility company should need to perform selected field tests on their system.
