Scope and method of study. This thesis concerns aspects of the steady-state and dynamic longitudinal behavior of a straight moving web between parallel cylindrical rollers/rolls. Fundamental analyses of interactions between adjacent web spans and non-ideal effects were emphasized. Experimental work was performed to validate the analytical work. Methods for the distributed control of tension in multi-span web transport systems were studied. Computer simulation was used to evaluate the most promising control methods.;Findings and conclusions. Open-loop mathematical models for "primitive" elements and subsystems in multi-span web transport systems were derived. These models were used to study non-ideal effects on tension variation and interactions between adjacent web spans. A computer-based analysis program for web transport systems (WTS) was developed. A method for the design of a distributed control system for the tension control in multi-span systems was developed.
