The primary objective of this thesis has been to investigate frameworks for evaluating the use and value of land ownership information and to develop a conceptual model for evaluating the use of land ownership information. Results are used to analyze the benefits that automation can be expected to have on the operations of recording and retrieving land ownership information. This is done by reviewing existing theories and methods, including economics of information, information theory, risk analysis, and cost-benefit analysis.Data gathered from a world-wide survey of organizations currently recording and distributing land ownership information and data gathered on specific institutional users of land ownership information was used to support the development of the conceptual model. The effect that automation of land ownership information has on the demand for land ownership information is illustrated through examples the state of New South Wales, Australia and the country of Sweden. The study emphasizes the use and value of land ownership information to society, especially the financial sector.The study adds to the scarce resources pertaining to world-wide data on land ownership information management. Development pressures on the world's land resources require more detailed conceptual frameworks for understanding land and its social and physical attributes. Such conceptual frameworks should allow more detailed analysis of the value that lies within land ownership information and point to ways in which societies may extract greater benefit from their land based resources. This thesis is presented as an agent for change to the way jurisdictions undertake the function of recording, storing and disseminating land ownership information.
